'Supply' in the European Union Internal Electricity Market means the sale, including resale, of electricity to customers (Article 2(19) of the Directive 2009/72/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 13 July 2009 concerning common rules for the internal market in electricity).
The same definition is used in Article 2(12) of the Directive (EU) 2019/944 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 5 June 2019 on common rules for the internal market for electricity and amending Directive 2012/27/EU.
In contrast to the electricity transmission and distribution, which are natural monopolies and the respective tariffs are regulated, the electricity supply prices are determined by markets and competitive.
The electricity system requires at any moment supply needs to equal demand.
