‘Electricity undertaking’ in the European Union Internal Electricity Market means any natural or legal person carrying out at least one of the following functions: generation, transmission, distribution, supply, or purchase of electricity, which is responsible for the commercial, technical or maintenance tasks related to those functions, but does not include final customers (Article 2(35) of the Directive 2009/72/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 13 July 2009 concerning common rules for the internal market in electricity and repealing Directive 2003/54/EC).
Similar definition is included in Article 2(57) of Directive (EU) 2019/944 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 5 June 2019 on common rules for the internal market for electricity and amending Directive 2012/27/EU with this difference that:
- aggregation,
- demand response, and
are added to the list of activities of an electricity undertaking.
